Cold causes qì to contract

寒则气收 〔寒則氣收〕hán zé qì shōu

Also cold causes contraction and tension. From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, jǔ tòng lùn). When cold qì damages the skin and flesh, the pores close, yáng qì contracts, and sweat ceases to flow; when it damages the sinews, the sinews become contracted and tense (hypertonic) and painful.
