Treating the tip
治标 〔治標〕zhì biāo
A deviation from the normal practice of treating the root in the case of acute disease. For example, ascites is always the tip, never the root of the disease in which it appears, but by causing constipation and urine retention, and inhibiting respiration, initial treatment should aim to expel water before radical treatment (treatment that addresses the root) is prescribed. See principle of treatment.
