Transmuted pattern
变症 〔變證〕biàn zhèng
Conversion of repletion into vacuity or a simple condition into a complex one because of inappropriate treatment (incorrect use of sweating, ejection, or precipitation, or use of supplementation in the treatment of repletion patterns) or insufficiency of right qì. For example, excessive use of sweat-effusing medicinals in the treatment of greater yáng (tài yáng) cold damage patterns can cause detriment to heart yáng and cause heart palpitation and fearful throbbing, and oppression in the chest. Another example is that of measles, where if papule outthrust is not complete, the papule toxin falls inward giving rise to a panting counterflow pattern. In both cases, the resulting condition is known as a transmuted pattern.
