Tongue rock

舌岩 〔舌岩〕shé yán

Also tongue mushroom. A growth on the tongue like a bean or mushroom, with a big head and thin stalk. Tongue rock is attributed to seven-affect binding depression creating heat in the heart and spleen channels that transforms into fire and toxin. If enduring heat damages yīn, it is red and ulcerated without skin, with continuous pain that is more severe in the evening than in the morning.

Biomedical correspondence: tumor of the tongue.

Medicinal therapy: In the early states, drain heart-spleen channel fire using Red-Abducting Powder (导赤散 dǎo chì sǎn) plus coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián) and rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄 dà huáng). For damage to yīn by enduring heat, treat by nourishing yīn and clearing heat. Use Throat-Clearing Dryness-Moistening Decoction (清咽润噪汤 qīng yān rùn zào tāng) plus rhinoceros horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 犀角 xī jiǎo) and coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián).
