A method of treatment used to alleviate hypertonicity and pain with agents such as licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 甘草 gān cǎo). For this purpose, licorice is often combined with white peony (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍药 bái sháo yào), which nourishes the blood and constrains yīn, and emolliates the liver and relieves pain.
