Precipitating heat toxin

下热毒 〔下熱毒〕 xià rè dú

To eliminate heat toxin through precipitation in patterns of externally contracted febrile disease either with high fever, agitation, clouded spirit, or with heat toxin penetrating the provisioning aspect with such signs as frenetic blood movement, maculopapular eruptions, bleeding, and intestinal abscesses.

Medicinal therapy: The main medicinal used is rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄 dà huáng), which is combined with large quantities of heat-clearing, toxin-resolving, and blood-cooling medicinals such as coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), arnebia/lithospermum (Arnebiae/Lithospermi Radix, 紫草 zǐ cǎo), moutan (Moutan Radicis Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí), cooked rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地黄 shú dì huáng), isatis leaf (Isatidis Folium, 大青叶 dà qīng yè), lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花 jīn yín huā), and dandelion (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英 pú gōng yīng). Two commonly used formulas are Heart-Draining Decoction (泻心汤 xiè xīn tāng), which primarily drains heat, and Rhubarb and Moutan Decoction (大黄牡丹汤 dà huáng mǔ dān tāng), which treats intestinal welling-abscess with pus-expelling and toxin-resolving medicinals.
