Phlegm and stasis binding each other

痰瘀互结 〔痰瘀互結〕 tán qì hù jié

Also called phlegm-stasis (痰瘀 tán yū). Various conditions marked by pain of fixed location that refuses pressure, persistent lumps, dull-purple tongue with thick slimy fur, and a pulse that is stringlike and slippery. Phlegm and stasis conditions can affect the heart, lung, liver, stomach, intestines, and joints. They begin gradually and are chronic. Signs include hard lumps; numbness and tingling of the limbs; paralysis; continual localized distending pain, stabbing pain, gripping pain, or oppressive pain of fixed location that refuses pressure; feeble-mindedness or mania and withdrawal; oppression in the chest and stomach duct glomus; phlegm rale in the throat; deformed swollen joints; dull lusterless facial complexion; pale purple or dull purple tongue with stasis speckles; a thick slimy tongue fur; and a pulse that is stringlike and slippery or sunken and rough. It is seen in chest impediment, wind stroke, feeble-mindedness, mania and withdrawal, goiter, concretions and accumulation, and in stubborn impediment.
