Perverted appetite

嗜食异物 〔嗜食異物〕 shì shí yì wù

Craving for strange foods. Eating of raw rice or earth in emaciated infants and children with abdominal distension and a lump in the umbilical region that moves when pushed is a sign of worm accumulation. This is as a result of eating unclean food. Craving for sour foods accompanied by the absence of menstruation, nausea, and a harmonious slippery rapid pulse in sexually active women is a sign of pregnancy. Indulgence in sour foods in pregnancy is not considered harmful if kept in moderation, but, in severe cases, it may accompany signs of stomach vacuity, stomach heat, stomach cold, phlegm stagnation, or liver heat that require appropriate treatment. Compare partiality for certain foods.
