Normal pulse

正常脉 〔正常脈〕 zhèng cháng mài

With approximately four beats per respiration, the normal pulse is steady and even. The normal pulse has a threefold significance:

  1. Its smoothness and strength indicate the presence of spirit.
  2. It is neither sunken nor floating, and the beat rises and falls evenly and effortlessly, indicating the presence of stomach qì.
  3. Strength at the deep level indicates the presence of root. See stomach, spirit, and root.
