n. Any instrument, usually of metal, used to puncture the skin and flesh in acupuncture. The most commonly used type of needle in modern acupuncture is the filiform needle, which is a modern finer version of the filiform needle that figured among the nine needles of antiquity. Other commonly used needles include the plum-blossom needle and the three-edged needle.
