Medicated leaven

麴〔麴〕

Abbreviation: leaven. A medicinal preparation made by fermenting powdered medicinals mixed with flour and then dried in cakes. Medicated leavens can be decocted with other medicinals. They enter the stomach and spleen and help digestion. The most commonly used is medicated leaven (Massa Medicata Fermentata, 神曲 shén qū). Others include pinellia leaven (Pinelliae Massa Fermentata, 半夏曲 bàn xià qū) and aquilaria leaven (Aquilariae Ligni Massa, 沉香曲 chén xiāng qū).
