Kidney governs hibernation

肾主蜇 〔腎主蜇〕 shèn zhǔ zhé

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, liù jié zàng xiàng lùn), The kidney governs hibernation, is the root of storage, and the place of essence. In the doctrine of the five phases, the kidney is associated with water phase, and in turn with winter. Winter is the time when animals hibernate and the forces of nature become dormant.
