Internal injury

内伤 〔內傷〕nèi shāng

Damage to the bowels and viscera and other deep structures of the head, chest, and abdomen through knocks and falls, lifting heavy weights, or spraining. Mild swelling and distension with pain of unfixed location indicates damage to qì. Pronounced pain with red, green-blue, or purple coloration of the skin, and spillage of blood from the vessels, and signs such as heat effusion and shivering, retching of blood, bloody stool, blood urine, or coughing of blood indicate damage to the blood. Acute pain in the chest, ribs, or abdomen, with clouding reversal, blood ejection, and bloody stool indicate damage to bowels and viscera.

Medicinal therapy: When necessary, internal injury is now treated by modern surgical techniques. Damage to qì is treated with Origin-Restoring Qì-Freeing Powder (复元通气散 fù yuán tōng qì sǎn). For damage to the blood and the organs, use Peach Kernel and Carthamus Four Agents Decoction (桃红四物汤 táo hóng sì wù tāng). For injury to the middle or lower part of the trunk, use Peach Kernel Qì-Coordinating Decoction (桃核承气汤 táo hé chéng qì tāng).
