Hobbled dorsum of the foot

趺蹶 〔趺蹶〕 fū jué

Stiffness of foot from the ankle to the toes, making it difficult for the patient to walk. The term first appears in the Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet (金匮要略 jīn guì yào lüè). 趺 means the dorsum or back of the foot; 蹶 jué means to have difficulty in walking or to stumble. It is a disease of the foot that is related to a loss of function in the tendons and joints. In addition to wounds from external damage, it is mostly caused by damage to the greater yáng (tài yáng) channel that results in hypertonicity in the sinews. Therefore Zhāng Jī recommends acupuncture therapy to relax the sinews.
