Blast-frying
炮 〔炮〕páo
Stir-frying (medicinal materials) vigorously in an iron wok over a fierce fire until they give off smoke and their surface becomes scorched, swollen, and cracked. Dried ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 干姜 gān jiāng), aconite (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, 附子 fù zǐ), and tianxiong aconite (Aconiti Tuber Laterale Tianxiong, 天雄 tiān xióng) may be processed in this way to reduce their harshness. Compare char-frying.
Etymology
Chinese: 炮 pāo, burn, blast.
