苦入心 〔苦入心〕kǔ rù xīn

Bitter medicinals act on the heart. Examples of bitter medicinals that enter the heart are coptis (Coptidis Rhizoma, 黄连 huáng lián), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子 shān zhī zǐ), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘 lián qiào), moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí), polygala (Polygalae Radix, 远志 yuǎn zhì), dried rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 干地黄 gān dì huáng), salvia (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, 丹参 dān shēn), madder (Rubiae Radix, 茜草根 qiàn cǎo gēn), and peach kernel (Persicae Semen, 桃仁 táo rén).
