五脏化液 〔五臟化液〕wǔ zàng huà yè

The heart, lung, liver, spleen and kidney are each related to the production of sweat, snivel, tears, drool, and spittle, respectively. Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, xuān míng wǔ qì piān) states, The five viscera form the humors; the heart forms sweat, the lung forms snivel, the liver forms tears, the spleen forms drool, and the kidney forms spittle. Zhāng Zhì-Cōng (张志聪) commented on this saying, The five viscera receive the liquid of grain and water, which pour out to the external orifices to form the five humors.
