Fetal qì
胎气 〔胎氣〕 tāi qì
1. The essential qì received by the fetus from the mother. The development of the fetus is depending upon fetal qì. If fetal qì is insufficient, the child will suffer from developmental diseases and a weak body. Hence, a child unable to stand and walk at the age of four or five is said to suffer from insufficiency of fetal qì.
2. The ability of the fetus to affect the health of the mother, e.g., upward forcing of fetal qì, and specifically, certain diseases of pregnancy, e.g., puffing of the face during pregnancy, or abdominal pain during pregnancy.
