Excess and deficiency
虚实 〔虛實〕 xū shí
Excess
and deficiency
are commonly used by other writers to represent 虚 xū and实 shí to denote general states of the body in the diagnostic context. By contrast, we translate 虚 xū and实 shí as vacuity
and repletion.
See vacuity and repletion. We reserve excess
and deficiency
as translations for other terms, notably 太過 tài guò /過極 guò jí and 不及 bù jí. In addition, we also use excess
to represent 淫 yín, as in the six excesses.
