Emergency precipitation to preserve yīn

急下存阴 〔急下存陰〕jí xià cún yīn

A method of treatment involving the use of one of the Qì-Coordinating Decoctions (承气汤 chéng qì tāng) to free stool, discharge heat, and eliminate dryness binds, in order to preserve fluids and prevent development of tetanic reversal. Emergency precipitation to preserve yīn is one form of raking the firewood from beneath the cauldron and is used in acute febrile diseases with signs of repletion heat vigorous heat [effusion], vexation and thirst, constipation, dry yellow tongue fur or black tongue fur with prickles, a forceful sunken replete pulse.
