泻 〔瀉〕 xiè
1. To eliminate evils in the body manifesting in repletion patterns. Words of similar meaning include:
- Dispel (祛 qū), destroy or drive out (evils from the body);
- Eliminate (除 chú), destroy or remove (evils, especially phlegm or dampness);
- Expel (驱 qū), remove (parasites from the body);
- Resolve (解 jiě), eliminate (evils, especially those affecting the exterior), or free (parts of the body from evils);
- Clear (清 qīng), eliminate (heat);
- Cool (凉 liáng), remove heat (from the blood aspect);
- Disperse (散 sàn), eliminate (cold) or whittle away (stasis nodes and binds);
- Disperse (消 xiāo), disintegrate or cause to disappear (glomus, phlegm and food accumulations, and swellings);
- Break (破 pò), disperse (static blood) gently but powerfully;
- Dry (燥 zào), eliminate (dampness by using dry, bitter medicinals);
- Disinhibit (利 lì), promote the free movement (of fluids, qì, or blood), or the elimination (of dampness, water qì), or free (parts of the body from impeded movement);
- Expel (排 pái), promote elimination from the body (phlegm, pus, static blood, stones, water, wind, worms);
- Precipitate (下 xià), to cause to pass downward, especially through the intestines and out of the anus;
- Attack (攻 gōng), eliminate evils forcefully; in particular, to precipitate.
2. Specifically, to eliminate fire and lower burner damp-heat.
