The five-phase law that disease can spread from one bowel or viscus to the other according to the engendering sequence. For example, liver-wood is the mother of heart-fire, and ascendant liver yáng causing exuberant heart fire is a disease of the mother affecting the child. Spleen-earth is the mother of lung-metal, and spleen-stomach vacuity giving rise to insufficiency of lung qì is another example. See also vacuity evil.
