CV-18 Jade Hall

玉堂 〔玉堂〕 yù táng

Alternate names: 玉英 yù yīng, Jade's Beauty

Channel: CV, controlling (rèn) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the chest, level with the third intercostal space on the midline.

Classical location: In the depression one cùn and six fēn directly above Chest Center (CV-17). From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The perforating branches of the internal mammary artery and vein. The anterior cutaneous branch of the third intercostal nerve.

Action: Loosens the chest and rectifies qì; suppresses cough and dispels phlegm.

Modern indications: Cough; panting; chest pain; retching and vomiting.

Classical indications: Vomiting and vexation; pain in the anterior chest; panting and fullness; vomiting and phlegm congestion; qì ascent; rib-side pain.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.2‒0.3 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 5‒20 min.

Point name meaning:

The heart is the sovereign viscus and resides within the palace hall. With the Purple Palace (CV-19) above and the Central Palace (CV-16) below, the Jade Hall completes the imperial landscape.

Some Daoist texts refer to the lung as the Jade Hall. (肺为玉堂宫 The Classic of the Yellow Court 黄庭内景经 huáng tíng nèi jǐng jīng). This point is located on the sternum above the lung; hence the name.
