BL-38 Superficial Cleft

浮郄 〔浮郄〕 fú xī

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the posterior aspect of the thigh, 1 cùn superior to the lateral end of the popliteal crease, on the medial side of the biceps femoris tendon.

Classical location: One cùn above Bend Yáng (BL-39). The point is found with the knee flexed. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The superolateral genicular artery and vein. The posterior femoral cutaneous nerve and the common peroneal nerve.

Action: Soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels; quickens the blood and relieves pain; clears and disinhibits the lower burner.

Modern indications: Constipation; pain or numbness and tingling in the thigh or the back of the knee (popliteal fossa).

Classical indications: Small intestinal heat; large intestinal bind; tension in the outer thigh.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Point name meaning:

This point name is a reference to the point’s location in a cleft, and to the superficial needling depth recommended for the point (0.5 cùn).
