Notes: Red ginseng is ginseng that has been treated by steaming. It has the same indications as white ginseng, except that being slightly warmer, it is more suited to treating reversal patterns.
Product Description: This product is the steamed root of the ginseng plant. It is a deep reddish-brown, bears longitudinal wrinkles, and at the head a number of transverse wrinkles. Sometimes the branch roots have broken off. The root is very hard but softens in damp weather. Like the white ginseng, it is cut into fine transverse slices for decoction. However, the steaming process makes the slices smooth and translucent. It is usually heated in an oven or over a flame to make cutting easier.
Etymology: 红参 (hóng shēn) literally means red ginseng.
