Canis Stomachi Calculus

Dog’s stomach calculus

狗宝 〔狗寶〕 gǒu bǎo

Kingdom: Animal

Origin in unofficial sources: Canis familiaris L.

Use: Medicinal

Properties: Sweet and salty; balanced; slightly toxic*.

Actions and indications: Downbears counterflow qì, relieves depression, and resolves toxin. Treats dysphagia-occlusion (yē gé); stomach reflux; welling- and flat-abscesses (yōng jū); clove sores (dīng).

Dosage and method: Oral: Grind to a powder (1.0–1.5g); can be used in pills and powders.

Quality: Soft chalky bezoars that can be marked with a fingernail are the best. Clear annular markings on the cross section are also a mark of good quality.

Production area: Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Xīnjiāng, Héběi, and less importantly in Guìzhōu, Guǎngdōng, Guǎngxī, Jílín, Liáoníng, Hēilóngjiāng, Qīnghǎi, Hénán, and ānhuī.
