Properties: Acrid and bitter; cold; toxic.

Indications:

  • Clears heat and resolves toxin; disperses swelling and relieves pain: Welling-abscesses (yōng) swelling; clove sores (dīng); snake and insect bites; external injuries with bleeding; painful blood stasis swelling.
  • Extinguishes wind and settles fright: Liver heat engendering wind; fright wind; epilepsy.

    Dosage & Method:

    Oral: Decoct 5–10; use with smaller amounts in pills and powders. Topical: Appropriate amount.

    Warning:

    Use with care in vacuity patterns and pregnancy.

    Product Area:

    Paris polyphylla: Jiāngsū, Zhèjiāng, Fújiàn, Jiāngxī, ānhuī, Húběi, Sìchuān, Guìzhōu, Yúnnán, Guǎngdōng, Guǎngxī. Paris chinensis: Yúnnán, Guǎngdōng, Húběi, Sìchuān, Shǎnxī (Shaanxi), ānhuī, and Jiāngsū. Paris quadrifolia: Shānxī. Other species and varieties are confined to Yúnnán and Guǎngdōng.
