Polygonatum Gruel
黄精粥 〔黃精粥〕 huáng jīng zhōu
Source: Yǐn Shí Biàn Lù 饮食辩录
Ingredients
- Huáng jīng (黄精 Polygonati Rhizoma, polygonatum [root]) 15–30g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 60g
- Bái shā táng (白沙糖 Saccharon Granulatum Album, white sugar) (to taste)
Actions: Supplements the spleen and stomach; moistens the heart and lung.
Indications: Spleen-stomach vacuity, fatigue and lack of strength, and reduced eating; lung vacuity cough or dry cough without phlegm; and coughing of blood in pulmonary consumption.
Method: Make a strong decoction of polygonatum. Strain, and then boil with rice to make a gruel. Double the weight of fresh polygonatum may be used instead; wash, slice, and decoct like the dry form.
Rationale: Huáng jīng is sweet and balanced. It enters the lung and spleen channels, and has a moistening effect. Made into a gruel with rice, it can be used for any type of vacuity detriment, irrespective of whether yīn, yáng, qì, or blood is affected.
