Ingredients:

• Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) 25g
• Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 15g
• Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 25g
• Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 9g
• Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite) 5g

Action: Enriches yīn and increases humor; frees the stool and discharges heat.

Indication: Yáng brightness bowel repletion pattern with yīn vacuity and damage to fluids, which cannot be treated by precipitation alone.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Dà huáng and Máng xiāo are fire-draining precipitants. Shēng dì huáng, Xuán shēn, and Mài dōng, which together constitute Zēng yè tāng (增液汤 Humor-Increasing Decoction), enrich yīn and increase humor and help the Dà huáng and Máng xiāo free the stool by the principle of increasing water to move the grounded ship.
