Scrofula-Dispersing Pill
消瘰丸 〔消瘰丸〕xiāo luǒ wán

Ingredients:
- Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) 10–15g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) (calcined) 15–20g
- Bèi mǔ (贝母 Fritillariae Bulbus, fritillaria [bulb]) 10–15g
Action: Disperses scrofula and nourishes yīn; transforms phlegm and softens hardness.
Indication: Scrofula and phlegm nodes with dry throat and bitter taste in the mouth. Tongue: Red. Pulse: Stringlike and slippery.

Rationale: Xuán shēn enriches yīn and downbears fire. Being bitter and salty, it disperses scrofula. Note that Latin name for (xuán shēn) derives from its ability to treat scrofula, recognized also in Western herbology. Bèi mǔ transforms phlegm and disperses swelling, resolves depression and disperses binds. Mǔ lì is a cold salty agent that fosters yīn and subdues yáng, as well as softening hardness and dispersing scrofula. This formula can be used in the early swelling stage or after rupture.
