Ingredients:

• Biē jiǎ (鳖甲 Trionycis Carapax, turtle shell) (or Biē jiǎ jiāo (鳖甲胶 Trionycis Caparacis Gelatinum, turtle shell glue)) 90g
• ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 22g
• Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 22g
• Zhè chóng (蟅虫 Eupolyphaga seu Steleophaga , ground beetle) 37g
• Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 15g
• Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 37g
• Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 37g
• Zǐ wēi (紫葳 Campsis Flos, campsis flower) 22g
• Shǔ fù (鼠妇 Armadillidium , wood louse) 22g
• Qiāng láng (蜣螂 Catharsius , dung beetle) 45g
• Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 45g
• Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 22g
• Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 7g
• Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 7g
• Wū shàn (乌扇 Belamcandae Rhizoma, belamcanda [root]) 22g
• Tíng lì zǐ (葶苈子 Lepidii/Descurainiae Semen, lepidium/descurainia) 7 g
• Qú mài (瞿麦 Dianthi Herba, dianthus) 15g
• Shí wěi (石苇 Pyrrosiae Folium, pyrrosia [leaf]) 22g
• Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark) 22g
• Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 22g
• Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) 22g
• Fēng fáng (蜂房 Vespae Nidus, hornet's nest) 30g
• Chì xiāo (赤硝 Nitrum Rubrum, red niter) 90g
• Mì (蜜 Mel , honey)

Action: Transforms stasis and disperses glomus.

Indication: Persistent malaria with hard glomus lump in the rib-side becoming a mother-of-malaria (nüè mǔ).

Method: Modern method is grind and make into small pills.

Dosage: Take 3g 3 times a day.

Rationale: The sovereign agent, Biē jiǎ, commonly used in the treatment of concretions, conglomerations, accumulations, and gatherings, softens harness and disperses binds. Dà huáng, Zhè chóng, Táo rén, Mǔ dān pí, Líng xiāo huā, Shǔ fù, and Chì xiāo break blood and attack stasis. These agents disperse the glomus lump. Chái hú, Huáng qín, Bàn xià, Rén shēn, Guì zhī, and Bái sháo, the main agents in Chái hú guì zhī tāng (柴胡桂枝汤 Bupleurum and Cinnamon Twig Decoction), harmonize provisioning and defense, and expel the evil. Hòu pò, Shè gān, Qiāng láng, and Fēng fáng precipitate qì and transform phlegm. Shí wéi, Qú mài, and Tíng lì zǐ disinhibit water-damp. ē jiāo and Dǎng shēn supplement qì and blood. Ginger helps the Guì zhī to move the blood.
