• Tiān má (天麻 Gastrodiae Rhizoma, gastrodia [root]) 6g
• Bèi mǔ (贝母 Fritillariae Bulbus, fritillaria [bulb]) 6g
• Dǎn xīng (胆南星 Arisaema cum Bile , bile [-processed] arisaema [root]) 3g
• Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 6g
• Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 4g
• Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 6g
• Fú shén (茯神 Poria cum Pini Radice , root poria) 6g
• Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]) 6g
• Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 6g
• Shí chāng pú (石菖蒲 Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, acorus [root]) 3g
• Yuǎn zhì (远志 Polygalae Radix, polygala [root]) 4g
• Quán xiē (全蝎 Scorpio , scorpion) 3g
• Jiāng cán (僵蚕 Bombyx Batryticatus , silkworm) 3g
• Hǔ pò (琥珀 Succinum , amber) 3g
• Zhū shā (朱砂 Cinnabaris , cinnabar) (drenched) 2g
• Zhú lì (竹沥 Bambusae Succus, bamboo sap) (drenched) 30g
• Jiāng zhī (姜汁 Zingiberis Rhizomatis Succus, ginger juice) (drenched) 30g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 2g

Action: Sweeps phlegm and opens the orifices; extinguishes wind and checks tetany; settles the heart and quiets the spirit.

Indication: Epilepsy that occurs when wind-phlegm rises counterflow, congesting the channels and network vessels, and obstructing the clear orifices, and manifesting in signs such as dizziness and oppression in the chest prior to attacks, which are characterized by sudden loss of consciousness, convulsions, foaming at the mouth, screeching, and in severe cases, urinary and fecal incontinence. Tongue fur: Slimy. Pulse: Stringlike and slippery.

Method: Grind to a powder and form into pills.

Rationale: Zhú lì, Shēng jiāng zhī, Dǎn xīng, and Chuān bèi mǔ dispel wind-phlegm and free the channels and network vessels. Bàn xià, Fú líng, and Chén pí dry dampness and transform phlegm, as well as enhancing splenic movement and transformation. Tiān má, Quán xiē, and Jiāng cán extinguish wind and check tetany. Shí chāng pú and Yuǎn zhì transform phlegm turbidity and open the orifices of the heart. Mài dōng, Dān shēn, Gān cǎo, and Fú shén nourish the heart and quiet the spirit. Zhū shā and Hǔ pò settle the heart and quiet the spirit. The formula as a whole focuses on sweeping phlegm and extinguishing wind.
