济川煎 〔濟川煎〕jì chuān jiān

Ingredients:
- Ròu cōng róng (肉苁蓉 Cistanches Herba, cistanche) (washed in wine to remove saltiness) 6–9g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9–15g
- Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) 6–9g
- Zé xiè (泽泻 Alismatis Rhizoma, alisma [tuber]) 3–5g
- Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root]) 2–3g
- Zhǐ ké (qiào) (枳壳 Aurantii Fructus, bitter orange) 1.5–3g
Action: Supplements the kidney and moistens the intestines.
Indication: Kidney vacuity constipation in weak, elderly patients. Accompanying signs: long voidings of clear urine; lumbar pain and cold in the back. Tongue: Pale with thin white fur. Pulse: Sunken and fine.

Rationale: Ròu cōng róngs with the saltiness removed is sweet and warm, soft and downbearing. It supplements the kidney and invigorates yáng, while also moistening the intestines and freeing the stool. Because of its dual action it is the sovereign agent. Dāng guī is warm, acrid, and moist. It nourishes yīn blood, as well as moistening the intestines. Niú xī is balanced in nature and oily in substance. It supplements the liver and kidney and strengthens the lumbus and knees, in addition to freeing the stool.
