Intestine-Moistening Pill [1]

润肠丸[1] 〔潤腸丸[1]〕rùn cháng wán

Ingredients:

Action: Moistens the intestines and frees the stool.

Indication: Inhibited defecation due to intestinal dryness occurring when liver wind stirs internally to upset the lung, which in turn upsets the large intestine. Dizziness may be an accompanying sign. Pulse: Fine and stringlike.

Category: Draining-precipitation formulas / Moist precipitation formulas

Method: Crush the maren and taoren, grind the other ingredients, and form into pills the size of firmiana seeds with honey. Can also be prepared as a decoction.

Dosage: 50 pills on an empty stomach with water.

Rationale: Dāng guī wěi combined with Qiāng huó and Huǒ má rén quicken the blood and course wind, emolliate the liver and extinguish, as well as freeing the stool. Dà huáng and Táo rén combined with Dāng guī quicken the blood and free stasis, moisten the intestines and free the stool, and also clear heat. Cannabis balances the acridity and dryness of the Qiāng huó, and its moist precipitating action is enhanced by Qiāng huó's powerful qì and mobility.
