Polyporus Decoction [1]

猪苓汤[1] 〔豬苓湯[1]〕zhū líng tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Disinhibits water, enriches yīn, and clears heat.

Indication: (a) Water and heat binding together with damage to yīn, characterized by inhibited urination, thirst with desire for fluids, heart vexation and insomnia; (b) strangury with painful urination, bloody urine, and distension, fullness, and pain in the lower abdomen.

Category: Dampness-dispelling formulas / Water-disinhibiting dampness-percolating formulas

Method: Decoct with water.

Dosage: The Chinese now double or triple the dosage (6–9g of each ingredient).

Rationale: Zhū líng, Fú líng, Zé xiè, and Huá shí clear heat and disinhibit dampness, making the damp-heat go out with the urine. ē jiāo, which is yīn in nature and flavor, enters the liver and nourishes the blood, as well as entering the kidney and enriching water. The combination of a water-disinhibiting agents combined with a supplementing agent ensures that the evil is eliminated without damaging right qì, and that yīn is nourished without retaining the evil.
