Pyrrosia Powder
石苇散 〔石葦散〕shí wéi sǎn

Ingredients:
- Shí wěi (石苇 Pyrrosiae Folium, pyrrosia [leaf]) 10g
- Qú mài (瞿麦 Dianthi Herba, dianthus) 10g
- Dōng kuí zǐ (冬葵子 Malvae Semen, mallow seed) 10g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 10g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 10g
- Mù tōng (木通 Akebiae Trifoliatae Caulis, trifoliate akebia) 10g
- Wáng bù liú xíng (王不留行 Vaccariae Semen, vaccaria [seed]) 10g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 10g
- Huá shí (滑石 Talcum , talcum) 30g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 3g
Action: Disinhibits water and frees strangury; quickens the blood and dispels stasis.
Indication: Sand strangury due to binding damp-heat with signs such as excruciating pain on urination with dark yellow and sometimes turbid urine, and the passing of sandy calculi or bloody urine. Tongue fur: Yellow and slimy. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.

Rationale: Shí wéi disinhibits water and frees strangury, as well as stanching bleeding. It can be used for sand, heat, and blood strangury. Huá shí, Qú mài, Mù tōng, and Dōng kuí zǐ are cold downsinking agents that help to disinhibit water and free strangury. Wáng bù liú xíng, Dāng guī, and Chì sháo quicken the blood and dispel stasis, and help to free strangury. Bái zhú and Zhì gān cǎo help to transform water-damp.
