Mysterious Two Powder (Pill)
二妙散(丸) 〔二妙散(丸)〕èr miào sǎn (wán)
Source: Dān Xī Xīn Fǎ 丹溪心法
Ingredients:
- Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) (stir–fried) 12g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) (stir–fried) 12g
Action: Dries dampness and clears heat.
Indication: Damp-heat pouring downward, causing pain in the lumbus, knees and other joints, leg qì (jiǎo qì) with painful swelling,

Method: Can also be prepared as a decoction.
Dosage: 3–6g 2–3 times a day.
Rationale: Cāng zhú is a warm bitter dampness-drying agent. Huáng bǎi is a cold bitter heat-clearing drug. The two together are an effective combination for drying dampness and clearing heat.
Variations:
Wind-damp impediment (shī bì) with pronounced damp-heat signs: Add Mù guā (木瓜 Chaenomelis Fructus, chaenomeles [fruit]), Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]), and Yì yǐ rén (薏苡仁 Coicis Semen, coix [seed]).- Damp-heat
vaginal discharge : Add Qiàn shí (芡实 Euryales Semen, euryale [seed]) and Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion). Leg qì (jiǎo qì) disease from lower burner damp-heat: Add Chì xiǎo dòu (赤小豆 Vignae Semen, rice bean) and Mù guā (木瓜 Chaenomelis Fructus, chaenomeles [fruit]).
