Ingredients:

• Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 800g
• Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 72g
• Bái fú líng (白茯苓 Poria Alba, white poria) 150g
• Bái mì (白蜜 Mel , honey) 320g

Action: Nourishes yīn and moistens the lung.

Indication: Lung-kidney yīn vacuity with enduring cough, dry throat, expectoration of blood or dry cough without phlegm, emaciation, reddening of the cheeks, dizziness and tinnitus, limp weak legs, shortness of breath, and spontaneous sweating. Tongue: Pale with scant fur, or crimson, smooth, and furless with little liquid. Pulse: Fine and weak.

Dosage: 10–15 ml twice daily.

Rationale: Shēng dì huáng enriches kidney water, while honey moistens lung dryness. This combination works on the principle of engendering between metal and water. Rén shēn and Fú líng boost qì and supplement the spleen, so that the spleen is better able to send its essence to the lung. This is the principle of earth engendering metal. In addition, Fú líng is a bland percolator and prevents the Shēng dì huáng and honey from causing stagnation. The formula largely relies on the ability of Shēng dì huáng to invigorate water to restrain fire and Rén shēn's ability to boost qì to engender fluid.
