Major Chest Bind Decoction
大陷胸汤 〔大陷胸湯〕dà xiàn xiōng tāng
Source: Shāng Hán Lùn 伤寒论
Ingredients:
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 9g
- Máng xiāo (芒硝 Natrii Sulfas , mirabilite) 15g
- Gān suì (甘遂 Kansui Radix, kansui [root]) 1.5g
Action: Drains heat and expels water.
Indication: Hard fullness below the heart with pain exacerbated by the slightest pressure, constipation, shortness of breath, vexation and agitation,

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula treats chest bind, which is caused by repletion heat and water-rheum binding in the chest and abdomen. This is an acute condition that requires swift action. Gān suì is a powerful cold sweet draining precipitant and water-expelling agent. It makes the heat and water-rheum come out through the stool and urine. Dà huáng and Máng xiāo are heat-clearing agents and draining precipitants that can help to flush out the bind.
