Action: Dispels wind and clears heat; regulates qì and the blood.
Indication: Initial-stage channel or network-vessel wind stroke with bitter taste in the mouth, heart vexation and heat effusion, inability to move the limbs, and stiff tongue preventing speech.
Category: Wind-relieving formulas / External wind formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Qín jiāo dispels wind and frees the network vessels, and it can also resolve heat. For this reason, it is the sovereign agent. Qiāng huó and Fáng fēng disperse greater yáng wind; Bái zhǐ disperses yáng brightness (yáng míng) wind; Xì xīn and Dú huó disperse lesser yīn wind. Fú líng, Bái zhú, and Gān cǎo fortify the spleen and boost qì to strengthen defense. Dāng guī, Shēng dì huáng, and Bái sháo supplement and quicken the blood and regulate provisioning. When provisioning and defense are secure, wind cannot enter the interior. The presence of heat (red tongue, yellow fur) is addressed by Shí gāo, Huáng qín, and Shēng dì huáng. Shēng dì huáng and Bái sháo help to combat the dryness of the wind-dispelling agents.
