Tea-Blended Chuānxiōng Powder

川芎茶调散 〔川芎茶調散〕chuān xiōng chá tiáo sǎn

Ingredients:

Action: Disperses the wind evil; relieves headache.

Indication: Medial headache, hemilateral headache, or vertex headache due to external wind or wind-cold, with aversion to cold, heat effusion, dizziness, and runny nose with clear snivel.

Method: Grind to a fine powder.

Dosage: Take 6g mixed with tea after meals.

Rationale: Chuān xiōng treats the lesser yáng headache and reverting yīn headache (pain at the apex or sides of the sides of the head). Qiāng huó treats greater yáng headache (pain in the back of the head and nape). Bái zhǐ treats yáng brightness headache. Xì xīn, Bò hé, Jīng jiè suì, and Fáng fēng are acrid ascending agents that disperse the wind evil in the head. All these agents combined relieve headache and can also resolve the exterior. Gān cǎo is added to harmonize all the agents of the formula. Finally, tea, which is bitter and cold, clears the head and brightens the eyes, as well as aiding digestion.
