Ingredients:

• Huái huā (槐花 Sophorae Flos, sophora flower) (stir–fried) 9–15g
• Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf) (stir–fried) 9–12g
• Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta) (stir–fried until black) 6–9g
• Zhǐ ké (qiào) (枳壳 Aurantii Fructus, bitter orange) (stir–fried) 6–9g

Action: Clears yáng and stanches bleeding.

Indication: Damp-heat brewing internally with bloody stool; or bleeding from hemorrhoids with bright colored blood. Contraindicated in an enduring condition of bloody stool with qì vacuity or yīn vacuity signs.

Method: Originally a powder; now prepared as a decoction.

Warnings: Contraindicated in persistent bloody stool with qì vacuity or yīn vacuity signs.

Rationale: Huái huā clears large intestinal damp-heat, cools the blood, and stanches bleeding. Cè bǎi yècools the blood and acts as an astringent, thereby helping the action of Huái huā. Zhike loosens the intestines and moves qì, while Jīng jiè suì course wind and rectifies the blood, these two agents thus eliminating the wind evil from the intestines.

Variations:

• Severe large intestinal heat: Add Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) and Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]).
• Heavy precipitation of blood: Add Dì yú (地榆 Sanguisorbae Radix, sanguisorba [root]) and Xiān hè cǎo (仙鹤草 Agrimoniae Herba, agrimony).
• Downpour of damp-heat: Add Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) and Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]).
