Blood Cough Formula
咳血方 〔咳血方〕ké xuè fāng

Ingredients:
- Qīng dài (青黛 Indigo Naturalis , indigo) (water-ground and taken drenched) 0.9–1.5g
- Guā lóu rén (瓜蒌仁 Trichosanthis Semen, trichosanthes seed) 6–12g
- Hē zǐ (诃子 Chebulae Fructus, chebule) 6–12g
- Hǎi fú shí (海浮石 Costaziae Os/Pumex, costazia bone/pumice) 9–15g
- Hēi shān zhī (黑山栀 Gardeniae Fructus Carbonisatus, charred gardenia [fruit]) 6–12g
Action: Clears fire and transforms phlegm; constrains the liver and relieves cough.
Indication: Liver heat scorching the lung causing coughing up of phlegm streaked with blood, reddening of the cheeks, heart vexation, thirst, and constipation. Tongue fur: Yellow. Pulse: Stringlike and fine.

Method: Grind to a powder and form into pills with honey. Can also be prepared as a decoction.
Rationale: Qīng dài is salty and cold, and enters the liver channel. It clears repletion fire in the liver channel, cools the blood, and stanches bleeding. It is effective for the purpose even when used alone. Zhī zǐ not only clears the heart and eliminates vexation but also helps the Zhī zǐ to drain depressed liver channel fire. Hǎi fú shí and Guā lóu zǐ clear the lung and transform phlegm as well as moistening the lung and relieving cough. Guā lóu zǐ, when combined with honey, also moistens the intestines and frees the stool, thus aiding the cough-relieving action. Hǎi fú shí and ginger work together to provide a good phlegm transforming action. Hē zǐ is sour, bitter, and balanced; constrains the lung and downbears fire, helping to relieve the cough.
