Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略

Ingredients

• Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf) 9–15g
• Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) 3–6g
• Ài yè (艾叶 Artemisiae Argyi Folium, mugwort [leaf]) 3–6g

Actions: Warms the center and stanches bleeding.

Indications: Persistent vomiting of blood (blood ejection) with withered-yellow facial complexion. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Vacuous and forceless.

Category: Blood-rectifying formulas / Blood-stanching formulas

Method: Decoct with water. Note that modern practice omits the mǎ tōng zhī 马通汁 originally included.

Warnings: This formula is contraindicated for vomiting of blood (blood ejection) due to frenetic movement of hot blood.

Rationale: Cè bǎi yè stanches bleeding. Gān jiāng warms the center and disperses cold. ài yè warms the channels and stanches bleeding.

Variations:

• Severe qì vacuity and constant bleeding: Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng).
• Reversal cold of the limbs, faint pulse and other signs of yáng collapse: Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) to return yáng and stem desertion.
