Arborvitae Leaf Decoction
柏叶汤 〔柏葉湯〕bǎi yè tāng
Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略
Ingredients:
- Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf) 9–15g
- Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) 3–6g
- ài yè (艾叶 Artemisiae Argyi Folium, mugwort [leaf]) 3–6g
Action: Warms the center and stanches bleeding.
Indication: Persistent
Category: Blood-rectifying formulas / Blood-stanching formulas
Method: Decoct with water. Note that modern practice omits the mǎ tōng zhī 马通汁 originally included.
Warnings: This formula is contraindicated for
Rationale: Cè bǎi yè stanches bleeding. Gān jiāng warms the center and disperses cold. ài yè warms the channels and stanches bleeding.
Variations:
- Severe
qì vacuity and constant bleeding: Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng). - Reversal cold of the limbs, faint pulse and other signs of
yáng collapse : Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) to return yáng and stem desertion.
