Clove and Persimmon Decoction [1]
丁香柿蒂汤[1] 〔丁香柿蒂湯[1]〕dīng xiāng shì dì tāng

Ingredients:
- Dīng xiāng (丁香 Caryophylli Flos, clove) 1.5–3g
- Shì dì (柿蒂 Kaki Calyx, persimmon calyx) 6–12g
- Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 6–9g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 3–5g
Action: Warms the stomach and disperses cold; downbears qì.
Indication: General vacuity in enduring illness with stomach qì vacuity cold manifesting in the form of hiccup,

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dīng xiāng and Shì dì warm the stomach and disperse cold and downbear counterflow, and hence are the sovereign agents. They are supported by minister agent Rén shēn, which supplements qì and boosts the stomach, and by Shēng jiāng, which strengthens the power of the sovereign agents to warm the center and stop hiccup. Thus, the formula addresses stomach vacuity, stomach cold, and stomach counterflow, so that hiccough and fullness disappear.
