Four Milled Ingredients Beverage

四磨饮 〔四磨飲〕sì mò yǐn

Source: Jì Shēng Fāng 济生方

Ingredients:

Action: Precipitates qì and downbears counterflow.

Indication: Liver depression and counterflow qì with distention and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, qì ascent and rapid panting, glomus and fullness below the heart, no thought of food and drink, a white tongue fur, and a stringlike pulse.

Category: Qì-rectifying formulas / Qì-downbearing formulas

Method: Originally, the agents were ground and decocted separately, and then boiled again together and taken warm. Today, it is simply prepared as a decoction.

Rationale: Bīng láng nut and Chén xiāng precipitate qì and downbear counterflow, thereby calming panting. Wū yào rectifies qì and loosens the center. Rén shēn boosts qì and supports right qì and prevents the qì-moving agents from dispersing right qì. For patients whose right qì is strong and suffering from more severe qì stagnation, the Rén shēn can be replaced by Mù xiāng and zhike. See Wǔ mò yǐn zǐ (五磨饮子 Five Milled Ingredients Drink).
