Rationale: Wū yào is a warm, acrid, freeing agent that moves qì and relieves pain, and is an important agent for relieving painful qì depression in the chest and abdomen. Yán hú suǒ quickens the blood and moves qì, helping the Wū yào to relieve pain. Xiāng fù and Mù xiāng course the liver and rectify qì, allowing liver qì to reach in orderly fashion. Combined with spleen-fortifying Shā rén and Gān cǎo, it helps to stop the liver-wood rebelling against spleen-earth. The formula thus treats the root and tip at the same time.
