Unripe Bitter Orange and Glomus-Dispersing Pill

枳实消痞丸 〔枳實消痞丸〕zhǐ shí xiāo pǐ wán

Ingredients:

Action: Disperses glomus and eliminates fullness; fortifies the spleen and harmonizes the stomach.

Indication: Spleen-stomach vacuity and food accumulation and stagnation, characterized by glomus and fullness below the heart, no desire for food and drink, general fatigue, and abnormal stool. Tongue fur: Yellow and slimy. Pulse: Weak.

Category: Qì-rectifying formulas / Qì-moving formulas

Method: Grind to a powder and make into pills with water or flour and water past. Can also be made as a decoction.

Dosage: 6–9g twice a day.

Rationale: Zhǐ shí and Bàn xià leaven are sovereign agents. They form an acrid opening and bitter downbearing combination that downbears counterflow and harmonizes the stomach, moves qì and disperses glomus. Dǎng shēn, Bái zhú, ginger, Fú líng, and Zhì gān cǎo are the minister agents. They rectify the center, disperse cold, and supplement the vacuity. Hòu pò, Mài yá, and Huáng lián are the assistants and couriers. They rectify qì, transform dampness, and eliminate fullness. In addition, they not only help to harmonize the center and increase food intake, but also harmonize the cold yīn and hot yáng agents.
