Bupleurum Liver-Coursing Powder

柴胡疏肝散 〔柴胡疏肝散〕chái hú shū gān sǎn

Source: Jǐng Yuè Quán Shū 景岳全书

Ingredients:

Action: Courses the liver and resolves depression; quickens the blood and relieves pain.

Indication: Binding depression of liver qì with rib-side pain, distension and oppression in the chest and stomach duct, and alternating heat effusion and aversion to cold.

Category: Qì-rectifying formulas / Qì-moving formulas

Method: Decoct with water. Take before meals.

Rationale: This is Sì nì sǎn (四逆散 Counterflow Cold Powder)with zhike instead of Zhǐ shí, and with the addition of Xiāng fù, Chén pí, and Chuān xiōng. However, the use of the ingredients of Counterflow Cold Powder differs from that of the original formula. Chái hú and Chuān xiōng free the liver channel of depressed blood. Xiāng fù and zhike disinhibit depressed qì in the liver channel. Bái sháo and Gān cǎo emolliate the liver and relieve tension. They also moderate the acridity and dryness of the other agents, which can damage yīn. As a whole, the formula courses and emolliates the liver, freeing the flow of qì and blood.

Notes: This is a variant of Sì nì sǎn (四逆散 Counterflow Cold Powder).
