Purple Gold Lozenge

紫金锭 〔紫金錠〕zǐ jīn dìng

Ingredients:

Action: Repels foulness and transforms turbidity; resolves toxin; checks vomiting and retching. Used topically, it quickens the blood and disperses swelling.

Indication: Nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, sand papules (shā zhěn), and unclear spirit-mind due to contraction of foul turbidity in the summer. Can also be applied topically to welling-abscess (yōng), sores and toxin swellings, and for snake and insect bites.

Category: Orifice-opening formulas / Warm opening

Method: Taking pre-ground powders, first grind the cinnabar and realgar together; add the other ingredients; then continue grinding to a fine powder.

Dosage: 0.3–0.6g 1–2 times a day, with water. For external use, mix with water and apply to the affected area.

Rationale: Shān cí gū, Xióng huáng, and Wǔ bèi zǐ repel foulness and resolve toxin. Shè xiāng opens the orifices and frees the internal block. Xù suí zǐ shuāng and 大戟 eliminate phlegm turbidity. Over recent years, this formula has been used for food poisoning, contagious cerebrospinal meningitis, and suppurative infections of the skin and soft tissue. This formula is also known as Yù shū dān (玉枢丹 Jade Pivot Elixir), but the formula by that name in the Qián Zhāi Jiǎn Yào Fāng (潜斋简要方) does not contain Zhū shā and Xióng huáng.
